With meetings taking place in various locations within the city, we have started off with meetings with Sneinton Alchemy and Carrington Tenants and Residents Association. Gaining a brief introduction to the areas, the great work the organisations are doing and starting a dialog focusing on how we can work together for the community in a way to help gain a sense of identity as well as improve the areas.
Sneinton Alchemy defines itself as 'A CIC (Community Interest Company) run by locals that works for the benefit of the community, to improve the neighbourhood and support local enterprise'. The group engages with the community in many different ways through projects and events in order to help develop the area and create a sense of identity.
We met with Shabana Najib one of the senior community organisers of the group. We discussed the upcoming Sneinton Festival (Starting 30th June!) and how our group can get involved to help to support the Festival and the work that Sneinton Alchemy Does.
The Carrington Tenants and Residents Association work on different projects in the Carrington area. With a community garden at the heart of the association the group are keen to expand projects and get involved with our project.
In 2010 the association created a very interesting history trail, a detailed guide to the different history of buildings and areas of Carrington. One of the main routes into the area is through a passage leading off Mansfield Rd, this is an area which has already had work done on it in the form of a colourful mural, mosaic bench and blossoming shrub border.
Carl from the association gave us a tour of the area, pointing out the swallow boxes in the eves of the buildings and discussed the idea of an informal 'drop in' session where we can brainstorm with the residents what they would like to see developed in the area.
Great stuff! Sneinton is looking forward to being involved in the project and seeing what we can achieve,
